Going Open Source

I find it really hard to believe how people will run after genuine commercial products where an "Open source " alternate is possible. I am a huge fan of the Open source Community and i believe in sharing knowledge with world. In My own college I advice my student to always look for an Open Source alternate to their software needs.

So in my colleges 6 systems in computer Labs are running with Ubuntu and OpenSuse Opearting system. And i am happy to say that those 6 system have never disappointed me and my student in anyway. Awareness is the key, letting student know that there is more then "windows" out there that they can try. And more you work with them , more you get comfortable with it. I know its hard to migrate from windows system, but learning new thing is essential in computer science.
Some of the open source software that our institute uses are Ubuntu, Opensuse, linux mint,Gimp,Firefox, Notepad++,Codelite, Open Office .org, Inkscape , Not to mention our server software apache, mysql and PHP. I was happy to see that my student were using Linux system on their laptops or desktops.
